Vintage Suzani, Samarkand

Suzanis are large, hand embroidered textiles from Uzbekistan that showcase the skilled technique of artisans who made them. Suzani were traditionally made by brides and their mothers, and presented to the groom on their wedding day, representing the binding of two families.

A large variety of patterns and symbols adorn the Suzanis. These traditionally include the sun and moon, flowers, and botanicals. These motifs represented luck, health, long life and fertility, giving the Suzani spiritual powers, and offering strength and protection to their owners.

This piece is vintage from the 1970s.
