Kaaterskill Falls, Overshot Coverlet

We love an Overshot Coverlet. These time-honored designs are a historical Americana pattern traditional woven by female weavers in the late 18th and early 19th Century. Each coverlet is one of a kind, and they were traditionally woven with red, white and blue color ways. The coverlets were woven on home looms, and constructed with two or three panels, stitched together. 

The Initials, “A M S” stands for name of the owner or the weaver of the coverlet. It was not unusual for textiles to be marked with the initials of the owner. The initials identified the coverlet as the woman's property, as women could only own and inherit "moveable" property.  A young woman might commission the weaving of a coverlet or receive one as a gift, and put it in her dowry (hope chest) saving it for use after marriage.
