Rugs FAQ

How do I choose the right rug size for my space?

As a general guideline, you'll want at least 18 inches of floor space around the rug's borders, especially in the living room or bedroom. For throw rugs and runners in small rooms and hallways, you can get away with having less space around the rug.

Does all of my furniture need to fit on the rug?

Not necessarily. In living rooms, we generally recommend placing at least the front legs of your furniture on the rug. For dining rooms, choose a rug large enough that chairs remain on the surface when pulled out. For bedrooms, if you make sure the bed and night stands fit on the rug, it will generally be large enough to provide softness under foot when getting in and out of the bed.

What’s the difference between hand-knotted and handwoven rugs?

Hand-knotted wool rugs are constructed knot by knot, creating exceptional durability and intricate patterns that can last for generations. Handwoven rugs are made on a loom and typically have a flatter weave, making them well suited for hallways, kitchens, and other high-traffic spaces.

Do I need a rug pad?

Yes. We generally recommend rug pads under every rug. A rug pad does more than keep a rug from sliding. It provides a layer of cushioning between the rug and the floor, helping the rug feel more comfortable underfoot while reducing movement, bunching, and shifting.

A good rug pad can also help protect both the rug and the floor. It reduces friction between the two surfaces, helps absorb some of the impact from everyday foot traffic, and can prevent the rug from wearing unevenly. On hardwood floors, the right pad can also help protect the finish.

The type of rug pad matters. A thin, low-profile pad may be best under a flatweave rug or in a space where doors need to clear the rug, while a thicker pad can add more cushioning beneath a higher-pile rug.
