Shade
Fixture

This flush mount fixture is a collaboration between Slow Roads and Kanaamitsuji, a Kyoto-based studio specializing in kyo-kanaami, the traditional Japanese craft of metal weaving with origins dating back more than 1,000 years.

The shade, which clips on to the bulb, is constructed using a combination of kikudashi chrysanthemum weaving and tortoiseshell weaving. It also incorporates tobashi-ami, a rare weaving method developed by Toru Kanaamitsuji and his father in which individual lines are intentionally skipped during the weaving process to create an open pattern within the mesh.

The form references traditional sconce and flush mount lighting, adapted here as a clip-on ceiling fixture. When illuminated, the woven structure casts a patterned shadow across nearby surfaces. The brass surface of the entire fixture gradually oxidizes with use, shifting over time into an aged brass finish.

Shades are handwoven in Kyoto, with fixture bases produced in the United Kingdom. Each piece is made individually by hand.
