Wildflower Churn Dash Quilt

One of our favorite recent finds. The Wildflower Churn Dash Quilt is a traditional hand made quilt, made with a variety of cotton fabrics. The design features a timeless arrangement of patterned period fabrics in the traditional Churn Dash pattern made popular in early 1900s. The style of quilt reflected what women saw around them, and what was important in their lives, such as the churn, a common household item. Many quilts had characteristics so localized that they could be classified geographically, much like differentiating between a southern American accent versus a northern one. However, as homesteaders traveled West, blending together on the trail and in the new territories, the patterns became intermingled and renamed. The Churn Dash pattern has over twenty different variations and names. Whatever the name, one can be certain it was meaningful to the maker, for even the simplest quilt represented a considerable investment of time and energy. The palette on the front of the quilt is made up of neutral earthy colors clay, root, sweet cream and bark, on a white ground- While the back of the quilt is white. The quilt is estimated to be from the 1890s, however the quilt was left unfinished as a topper and was recently found and finished.  One of a kind.
