Akazu-Yaki Rabbit
Considerations:
✓ Handcrafted
✓ Vintage
✓ One of a kind
One of our favorite vintage finds. The Akatsu-Yaki Ceramic Rabbit is a vintage piece crafted in Japan. It originates from the Akazu-yaki tradition, a subset of Seto-yaki produced in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Seto ware is considered one of the country’s oldest kiln traditions and among the first to introduce glazed finishes to previously unglazed Japanese pottery.
Hand-formed in ceramic, the piece features a slate-grey and dark-brown glaze with a natural patina that reflects its age. The surface shows the subtle irregularities characteristic of kiln-fired work from this region. The base is engraved with the hiragana character み (mi).
This rabbit figure is connected to long-standing Japanese symbolism, where the form is associated with ideas of forward motion and generational prosperity. It is housed in a vintage handmade wooden box filled with traditional Japanese wrapping materials, including printed textiles and kimono fabric remnants. One of a kind.
