The Lakeside Bowtie Quilt is a traditional hand made quilt, made with a variety of cotton fabrics. The design features a elegant arrangement of patterned period fabrics in the traditional Bowtie pattern made popular in the 1920s. The bowtie quilt block design dates back to the days of American pioneers, it also has historical ties to the Underground Railroad. Similarly to the churn dash quilt block, this design is based on a style elements of life at the time, the bowtie. The quilt is storied to be a sort of secret code for runaway slaves, indicating they should dress up to avoid detection. The palette is made up of soft earthy colors of slate, sky blue, lake blue, white and ecru with accents of fire red and blush pink. The quilt has an ecru cotton backing with a small pinkish red floral motifs. The quilt is estimated to be from the 1870s. One of a kind.
