One with Nature Outsider Painting

One of our favorite finds. This small surrealist gem is both turbulent and charming. The Art Brut style focuses on archetypical elements of a pastoral scene moving between abstraction and figuration. Similar to the works of Forrest Bess and Jean Dubuffet, the painting is only roughly sketched, dense, and descriptive rather than representational with images of trees, mountains, clusters of snakes, and a looming god-like figure, all deliberately vague. Jean Dubuffet coined the term “Art Brut”, literally ‘raw art’, in 1945, evoking the concept of art far removed from traditional ideals of beauty. Art Brut can be seen as the grandfather of outsider art. The impasto exposes the artist hand employing processes of both addition and subtraction with visible brushstrokes, dots of color, and markings cut into the surface.
