Vintage Japanese Kakishibu Box
Considerations:
✓ Handcrafted
✓ Vintage
✓ One of a kind
This vintage Japanese box dates to the early 1900s and is constructed from washi paper layered over a bamboo frame. The paper, made from mulberry fibers, has been treated with kakishibu (fermented persimmon tannin) to increase durability and water resistance, resulting in a rustic reddish-brown surface with natural patina.
The box shows signs of age, including staining and patched areas, consistent with its original utilitarian use for storing rice or other household items. The construction reflects traditional Japanese techniques and the practical aesthetics of wabi-sabi. One of a kind.
