Fragment of Japanese wa-sarasa (sarasa) textile, featuring a geometric arrangement of cruciform and circular floral motifs in red. Created using katazome (stencil dyeing), with fine detailing visible in petal interiors and surrounding areas.
Made of cotton, the fabric has developed a soft, supple texture from years of use. Stitch marks along the edges and dye penetration to the back indicate a functional use, likely as a futon cover. Estimated to date from the late Edo period, Bunka-Bunsei era (1804–1830), reflecting the period’s highly detailed repeating patterns and the use of bengara (red iron oxide) pigment. One of a kind.
