The Mariner’s Compass Quilt, estimated to date from the 1860s, is a traditional handmade textile constructed from a variety of cotton fabrics. It is hand pieced and hand quilted in a Mariner’s Compass design, a historically significant navigational motif once used at sea to determine direction relative to magnetic north. The front presents a palette of navy, stone blue, and rust set against a mixed charcoal and rust-grey ground, creating a quiet sense of movement and orientation across the surface. The reverse is a solid umber, showing visible tattering and thinning consistent with age, finished with a thin raw umber border. One of a kind.
