Antique Japanese Nesting Box
Considerations:
✓ Handcrafted
✓ Vintage
✓ One of a kind
This antique Japanese nesting box set dates to 1887, during the Meiji Era. The set includes seven boxes crafted from hinoki (Japanese cypress), a wood traditionally valued in Japan for its light weight, durability, and natural resistance to moisture. Each box is finished in a red lacquer coating, applied to protect the wood and extend its use in domestic settings.
The boxes are graduated in size and designed to nest together, a practical solution for compact storage. Lacquer wear is consistent across the set, with areas of soft fading and surface variation that reflect age and repeated handling. The natural aroma of hinoki wood and the worn yet glowing lacquer surface speak to its age and long history of use. One of a kind.
