Shifu Plaid Runner
Considerations:
✓ Handcrafted
✓ Vintage
✓ One of a kind
This antique Japanese textile dates to the Meiji Period and combines handwoven cotton with shifu, a traditional Japanese textile technique using yarn made from paper. Recycled paper yarn is woven into horizontal bands throughout the cloth, creating subtle shifts in texture against the surrounding cotton.
A bold plaid pattern in deep indigo, soft blue-green, natural, and warm persimmon gives the textile an unexpectedly modern quality. Originally part of a larger textile, the fragment shows visible wear, small holes, fraying, and irregularities consistent with its age and history. Well suited for hanging as textile art, framing, or layering decoratively across a table or sideboard. One of a kind.
