This is an Ainu ceremonial mat known as “Chitarape,” often translated as a flower mat.

Chitarape are woven mats traditionally used in Ainu rituals and ceremonies, placed on the ground as sacred surfaces for offerings, ritual vessels, and ceremonial objects presented to the gods. This mat is woven primarily from cattail fibers, with a warp of undyed elm bark (ohyō), a material long used in Ainu textile and cordage traditions.

The black geometric pattern is created from elm bark fibers that have been dyed, forming a quiet, structured design within the weave. Woven bands of cloth are also present, likely silk or early synthetic material, suggesting a Showa-period origin. One of a kind.
