Japanese Ceramic Ox

This vintage Japanese ceramic okimono depicts the Ox, one of the twelve animals of the Eastern zodiac, in a naturalistic reclining pose. Rendered in warm, earthy brown pottery, the sculpture reflects the quiet character traditionally associated with the ox in Japanese art. Okimono, meaning “object for display,” refers to decorative sculpture intended to be appreciated up close.

Signed by the artist on the underside, the piece is presented in its original paulownia wood storage box and includes documentation describing its creation for a New Year’s exhibition as an auspicious symbol of prosperity and longevity, along with the artist biography of Kyoto ceramist Ogawa Kinji. One of a kind.
