This vintage Japanese katagami is a hand-cut stencil crafted from heavy washi paper treated with persimmon tannin, or kakishibu, for strength and moisture resistance. Traditionally used to pattern kimono textiles through the katazome technique, katagami are meticulously carved using hand-forged blades and punches, reflecting a highly specialized craft passed through generations of artisans. This example features a delicate vine-scroll design, showcasing the precision and rhythmic quality of the carving. Newly matted and framed. One of a kind.
