This wall-mounted industrial sconce is a collaboration between Slow Roads and Kanaamitsuji, a Kyoto-based studio specializing in kyo-kanaami, the traditional Japanese craft of metal weaving with origins dating back more than 1,000 years.
The shade is constructed using a combination of kikudashi chrysanthemum weaving and tortoiseshell weaving. It also incorporates tobashi-ami, a rare weaving method developed by Toru Kanaamitsuji and his father in which individual lines are intentionally skipped during the weaving process to create an open pattern within the mesh.
The form references industrial warehouse cage lighting from the early 1900s, adapted here as a wall-mounted fixture. When illuminated, the woven structure casts a patterned shadow across nearby surfaces. The brass surface of the fixture gradually oxidizes with use, developing a deepened brass patina over time.
Shades are handwoven in Kyoto, with fixture bases produced in the United Kingdom. Each piece is made individually by hand.
