Stages of Transformation, Lithograph

This hand-colored copperplate engraving, published in Weimar in 1805 by Friedrich Johann Bertuch, depicts the development of moths from caterpillar to cocoon to adult. Each figure is labeled to indicate its stage of transformation. The upper section shows caterpillars with detailed textures, the middle displays their protective cocoons, and the lower section presents fully formed moths with intricate wing patterns. Drawn from Bertuch’s Bilderbuch für Kinder, the plate combines precise scientific observation with careful artistic execution. Hand-applied color highlights the details of each specimen. One of a kind.
