Study in Stillness, Oil Painting

This antique oil painting depicts a game bird, likely a partridge or grouse, resting on a pale stone or marble ledge. Painted in a muted palette of grey-green, rust, cream, and black, the composition is rendered in loose, expressive impasto brushwork. A painted “R” monogram appears in the upper right, though the artist remains unidentified. The painting is housed in its original aged wood frame, finished in soft grey-green with a gilt inner lip and natural wear throughout. The frame has chipped paint, a small crack in the glazing, and is approximately ¼ inch taller on the right side, all consistent with its age. Drawing from the Dutch and Flemish game still life tradition, this piece brings a distinctly timeworn character to the collection. One of a kind.
