The Quilt Shop FAQ

What types of quilts does Slow Roads carry?
Our Quilt Shop brings together handmade and vintage quilts from around the world, including traditional American patchwork quilts, Indian Kantha quilts, Japanese Sashiko and Boro textiles, hand-block printed cotton quilts, and original Slow Roads designs. Each piece is selected for its craftsmanship, material, pattern, and character.

What is the difference between Kantha, Sashiko, Boro, and block print quilts?
Each tradition uses a distinct technique. Kantha quilts are created by layering textiles and joining them with rows of hand stitching. Sashiko uses repeated hand stitching to reinforce and decorate cloth, while Boro describes textiles that have been repeatedly patched, layered, and repaired over time. Block print quilts begin with fabric printed by hand using carved wooden blocks before being layered and quilted.

Are Slow Roads quilts handmade?
Many of our quilts are made or finished by hand using traditional textile techniques, including hand quilting, hand stitching, wood-block printing, and weaving. Our collection also includes antique and vintage quilts whose construction and techniques vary by age and origin.

Are the vintage quilts one of a kind?
Yes. Our antique and vintage quilts are individually sourced and one of a kind. Fading, repairs, variations in stitching, and signs of wear are part of their history and give each textile its individual character.

Can quilts be used as throws or textile art?
Yes. Depending on their size and condition, quilts can be layered across a bed or sofa, used as a throw, or displayed on a wall as textile art. For antique and particularly delicate pieces, we recommend considering the condition and construction before everyday use.

How should I care for a handmade or vintage quilt?
Care varies depending on the materials, dyes, age, and construction of each quilt. Always refer to the care instructions on the individual product page. Some cotton quilts can be gently machine washed, while vintage, hand-dyed, and delicate textiles may require dry cleaning or more specialized care.
